ZAMBOANGA CITY – A 6.5 magnitude quake hit the southern Filipino port city of Zamboanga late Monday afternoon, but there were no reports of casualties or serious damage, although aftershocks are expected to occur, officials said.

Engineer Allan Labayog, of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said the tremor was tectonic in origin and traced about 31 kilometers undersea, some 200 kilometers northwest of Zamboanga.

He said there was no tsunami warning, but the quake was moderately strong.“We are expecting aftershocks in Zamboanga City,” he said.

Labayog said the earthquake occurred at 5.29 in the afternoon. “We have not received any reports of damages. The quake registered 6.5 Magnitude, Intensity 4 in Zamboanga City,” he said.

The Philippines sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer area where large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. It has more than 400 volcanoes and sometimes called the circum-Pacific seismic belt. (Mindanao Examiner)
