An explosion was reported on Thursday outside the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.
The percise circumstances behind the incident were not immediately clear, but a woman apparently doused herself with gasoline and was detained, according to official media.
Bystanders shared video of the aftermath on social media, showing images of smoke unfurling in the street and what appeared to be police vehicles surrounding the building in the city’s Chaoyang District.
The blast was heard from blocks away, The New York Times reported.
Authorities have yet to comment of the incident and an embassy spokesman said he was still collecting information.
The ruling Communist Party newspaper Global Times said police “took away a woman spraying gasoline on herself in suspected attempt at self-immolation” at around 11 a.m.
