ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Apr. 7, 2013) – Two government soldiers were wounded in a weekend clash with Abu Sayyaf militants in the southern Philippine province of Sulu, officials said.

Officials said soldiers were patrolling the village of Kitutaan in Talipao town when it ran into a group of militants and a fire fight ensued.

“Two of our soldiers are wounded in the fighting and were rushed to a military hospital in Jolo (town),” said Army Col. Rolando Gregorio, a spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command.

Gregorio said an undetermined number of Abu Sayyaf fighters were either killed or wounded in the clash. “There is an ongoing operation against the Abu Sayyaf in Talipao,” he said.

The Abu Sayyaf is a small, but the most notorious rebel group in southern Philippines largely blamed for the spate of bombings and kidnappings of foreigners in the troubled region. (Mindanao Examiner)
