DAVAO CITY – It was fiesta atmosphere in the 2nd General Assembly of Hugpong Ng Pagbabago held at SMX Convention Center here on Thursday, with City Mayor Inday Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio, Chairperson of HnP, rallying the group to campaign intensively to ensure the victory of their local candidates including those in the senatorial line-up.
Mayor Inday emphasized the need to strengthen HnP as a regional organization first before thinking of making it into a national party. Early in the organization of HnP she underlined the need for a solid regional political party to be able to effectively demand for concessions in the national leadership including the Senate and House legislative chambers.
HnP however started to gain adherents from political pillars nationwide and already proved its influence when it dethroned Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
Carpio, who is President Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter, had rounded-up almost all local officials in the Davao region to join her regional party that is expected to battle with then Alvarez’s “full slate” in the upcoming 2019 midterm elections after Alvarez tagged HnP as an opposition party.
The two became irreconcilable when the ex-speaker introduced himself in a gathering somewhere in Northern Mindanao where he allegedly uttered that Duterte is President and that while he is Speaker he can impeach a President. Alvarez had denied saying but Mayor Inday Sara did not buy his denial.
Present during the assembly were Davao del Norte Governor Anthony del Rosario, Davao Oriental Gov. Claude Bautista, Davao Occidental Gov. Nelson Dayanghirang and Davao de Oro (Compostela Valley) Gov. Tyron Uy.
Also conspicuously present were Congressman Tonyboy Floirendo of the 2nd District of Davao del Norte, former 3rd District Rep. Isidro Ungab and Davao del Norte Boardmember Rodney del Rosario (2nd District) who are both running for Congressman and Governor respectively and former Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario.
In her brief statement, Mayor Inday Sara, who is running unopposed in her re-election bid, said that she will help campaign for HnP candidates anywhere if she has to when the campaign starts. Also in the list of the Mayor’s candidates for the senatorial race are Bong Go, “Bato” dela Rosa and Imee Marcos.
The list will likely include the senatorial preference of her father, Pres. Rodrigo Duterte who picked his bets from other political parties aside from Bong Go and Bato. Among them are: Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos (NP), Sen. Cynthia Villar (NP), Pia Cayetano (NP), Sonny Angara (LDP) and Francis Tolentino. (Jun Ledesma)
