THE DEPARTMENT of Agriculture (DA) has recognized the local government of Zamboanga City as top producer of high-quality corn and has qualified in the 2019 National Quality Corn Achievers Award (NQAA).
The NQAA is an annual competition organized by the DA in recognition to the achievements of top performing local governments such as Zamboanga City under the leadership of Mayor Beng Climaco; and DA regional field offices in producing quality corn in support to the development of the industry.
Climaco will represent Zamboanga together with City Agriculturist Carmencita Sanchez and Teodulo Adora, the local government’s Corn Banner Coordinator, to the NQCAA awarding ceremony in Iloilo City next month which will coincide with the National Corn Congress.
Eight local farmers were also awarded the recent 4th Regional Agricultural Extension Workers’ Congress held in Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur province.
They were Mark Christopher Basalludin, of Bolong, who is the Gawad Saka Outstanding Corn Farmer; Gerald Galvez, of Culianan, was awarded the Outstanding Gawad Saka Young Farmer, and the Eugenio family, of Tolosa, was Outstanding Farm Family award. And other awardees were Medardo Lozada, Sean Janubas, Richard Malincon, Jaime Troyo and Danilo Cajes.
The NQCAA is a DA strategy to strengthen its ties with local governments and farmers’ groups across the country to boost corn development. (Zamboanga Post)
