CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Travellers and provincial commuters in Cagayan de Oro City in Northern Mindanao may now enjoy free Wi-Fi services, particularly at the East-West Terminal Departure and Arrival Area.
The terminal in the village of Bulua has been fitted with public Internet access by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) as part of the government’s “Free Public Internet Access Program.”
The program aims to provide free access to Internet service in public places throughout the country.
Jocelyn Peñalosa, OIC-manager at the East-West Terminal and Public Market, said this program will give the public not only free Internet access, but also a better accessibility to economic, social, educational opportunities in this globally competitive world.
In Northern Mindanao, at least 94 free Wi-Fi had been installed with Misamis Oriental having 39; Misamis Occidental with 10l; Bukidnon with 21; Camiguin with 10 and Lanao del Norte with 14. Engr. Aurellano Vicerra, Jr., DICT’s focal person for this program, said a total of 3,000 public places nationwide have free Internet access with over 5 million users across 77 provinces and 768 localities.
DICT Assistant Regional Director Frederick DC Amores said within the next few months, bandwidth for the free public Internet will be increased to meet the demand of Internet users. “We will do more educational campaigns, to educate our stakeholders for proper use of these facilities,” he said.
