ZAMBOANGA CITY – At least 22 people were injured when a passenger jeep collided with a tricycle on Wednesday in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga, officials said.
Officials said police were investigating the mishap which occurred in the village of Cawit. The tricycle, commonly known here as “kuliglig” (cricket), was illegally operating.

Mayor Beng Climaco also rushed to the hospital to see the condition of the victims, many of them suffered head injuries and fracture bones. She told Dr. Dulce Miravite, the City Health Officer, to provide medical assistance to the injured.
Climaco has ordered an investigation into the accident. Many tricycles or kuliglig are illegally operating in villages here, notably in Tetuan and Talon-Talon. These kind of tricycles are largely made from low quality steel pipe and side car taken from a pedicab and usually overloaded with passengers. It derives its name from cricket because it usually plies from one route to another to avoid detection by authorities. (Zamboanga Post)
