FOLLOWING THE SPATE of house fires in Zamboanga City, Mayor Beng Climaco appealed to residents to take safety precautions to prevent house fires and the appropriate actions to take in the event of a fire.
Climaco urged residents to exercise personal responsibility and close supervision in using appliances at home to prevent fire incident. “I would like to make an appeal to all residents of Zamboanga in the light of the spate of fire incidents that parents, grandparents and children must actively participate in ensuring that we comply with the safety measures such as supervision over all plugged electrical appliances,” she said.
“Secondly, do not allow hazardous materials that can cause fire from being unsupervised whether by adults or children,” she added, noting a report by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) that most of the fires were caused by faulty electrical wiring and personal negligence.
Climaco said she had conferred with the members of the BFP and Councilor El King Omaga, chairman of the City Council Committee on Disaster Prevention, and also informed Vice Mayor Rommel Agan that there is an urgent need to take proactive measures to prevent fires.
“We will have to take proactive measures and one of the most important measures is for all residents to be responsible na di aton maga caserias, especialmente na usada del di aton maga equipaje na casa tambien.”
“This is also part of our campaign to ensure that when we are using our appliances, necesita personal supervision and personal responsibility down to the children. This is the most effective means (to prevent fire) because prevention must begin at home,” she said.
Climaco also met with BFP Regional Director, Senior Superintendent Sydney Besana, and newly-installed City Fire Marshal, Superintendent Marie Epiphany Ramirez and discussed measures on how to further intensify fire prevention and fire safety awareness. She urged the BFP to undertake measures to heighten public awareness on the prevention and control of fire incidents here. (Zamboanga Post)
