FORTY (40) FARMERS from the municipality of Malabang have undergone a one-day training on Organic Vegetable Production conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR) Lanao del Sur in Malabang Municipal Session Hall, recently.
The training was aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of local farmers on organic vegetable production to increase their farm income and improve the nutritional status of their family and the community as a whole.
The farmers came from Barangay Madaya, Matling, Matalin and Tambara.
Tackled during the training were the advantages and limitations of organic agriculture, nursery management, and good agricultural practices in organic vegetable farming.
The farmer-participants were also taught on field operations for common types of lowland and upland vegetables, as well as, managing an organic vegetable farm with emphasis on the cultural, mechanical and biological aspects of controlling pests such as the use of botanical pesticides and maintaining a balance of beneficial organisms in the farming ecosystem.
Malabang Municipal Mayor Yahya Macapodi expressed his support to all the programs of the MAFAR saying these will benefit farmers in his municipality. He thanked the MAFAR employees for bringing agricultural services closer to the people.
Kagawad Arham Tingaraan, chairperson of the Municipal Agriculture Committee, was also grateful to MAFAR for holding the training in Malabang. He further appreciated the enthusiasm of farmers who came despite the threat of bad weather. He expressed optimism that the technology shared will improve their vegetable farming practices.
Meanwhile, MAFAR Lanao del Sur distributed packets of assorted vegetable seeds to the farmers as starter input for their backyard vegetable production projects.(By Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform)
