MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 16, 2012) – Top Filipino boxer Nonito Donaire, Jr. defeated Mexican Jorge Arce on Sunday and remains the WBO super bantamweight champion.
Donaire said he would rest for a while after defending his belt against Arce.
Manila praised Donaire, whose fight came days after Philippine pride Manny Pacquiao was brutally knocked out by Mexican star Juan Manuel Marquez.
“Along with the Filipino people, we congratulate Nonito Donaire, Jr. for successfully defending his WBO super bantamweight belt via a third round knockout against Jorge Arce of Mexico,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a statement sent to the Mindanao Examiner.
She said: “Once again, the Filipino Flash displayed his speed and skill in the ring, and showcased the strength and toughness of the Filipino on the world stage. This triumph reflects our country’s ability to face and overcome any challenge that confronts us. No punch will keep us down; no strike will shake our spirit. Any challenge only intensifies our collective desire to bring glory to our nation.” (Mindanao Examiner)
