3 civilians killed in Jammu and Kashmir in cross-border firing by Pakistan: Indian Army

NEW DELHI – The Indian Army said Wednesday that three civilians were killed in cross-border firing by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The Pakistan Army resorted to arbitrary firing, including artillery shelling from posts across the Line of Control and international border opposite Jammu and Kashmir,” it said in a statement.

“Three innocent civilians lost their lives in indiscriminate firing/shelling,” it said, adding that the Indian Army is “responding in a proportionate manner.”

The firing at the border comes after India launched missile strikes targeting nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir early Wednesday.

The Pakistani Army said at least eight people were killed and 35 injured while two are missing in the attacks.

Earlier, India said it launched missile attacks targeting nine sites of “terrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

The escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors comes in the wake of an April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir in which 26 people were killed.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack, claiming there were cross-border links. Pakistan denied that it had anything to do with the killings. (Anadolu)
