ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE – Police detained a village chieftain who shot and wounded a deranged man who attacked him with a bolo in Zamboanga del Norte’s Salug town in southern Philippines.
Police said Primitivo Orongan, 68, surrendered after shooting the 27-year old Ritoy Mangubat in the village of Canawan.
Orongan said he and his family were eating in front of their house when Mangubat arrived and without warning tried to hack him. He said he was forced to shoot the attacker with a shotgun to defend himself.
It was unknown what triggered Mangubat to attack the village leader. Mangubat, whom police said is suffering from a mental illness, was rushed to hospital. (Mindanao Examiner)
