ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / July 26, 2012) – An unidentified gunman shot dead a one person and critically wounded another in a daring attack Thursday afternoon at a busy street in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, police said.
Police said the victims were riding on a motorcycle when the gunman attacked. The assailant fled after the shooting.
The names of the victims were not immediately available, but a local radio station, RMN, identified the dead as George Yap and his companion Melchor Revilla, who was rushed to hospital.
Police said the victims were local residents. The motive of the attack is still unknown and no witnesses have come forward to give statement to the police.
Gun attacks are not uncommon in Zamboanga City where hired killers actively operate and among those who was a victim to the string of murderous rampage was Arturo Eustaquio III, president of the Universidad de Zamboanga. Eustaquio was shot in April as he was leaving his bungalow on a motorcycle. (Angelie Cahulugan and Alvin Lardizabal)
