ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Apr. 4, 2012) – Police shot dead a gunman and captured his companion in shootout Wednesday in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said police were investigating whether the slain man or his companion were involved in the killing of Dr. Arturo Eustaquio, president of the Universidad de Zamboanga, on April 1 in the village of Santa Maria.
Patrolling policemen tried to accost the two men who were on riding on a motorcycle in the village of Guiwan when one of them pulled out a .45-caliber pistol and shot the lawmen, triggering a brief fire fight that left the gunman dead.
Chief Superintendent Mario Yanga, the acting city police chief, said they have recovered the pistol from the slain man and is being tested whether it was the same weapon used in the killing of Eustaquio.
“We have sent it the police crime laboratory for ballistic examination to determine whether it was the same weapon used in the killing of Eustaquio,” he said.
Yanga said police also recovered several shirts from the motorcycle’s tool box which could have been used to hide the men’s identities every time they committed crimes.
Police is still investigating the motive of the murder of Eustaquio. (Mindanao Examiner)
