KIDAPAWAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Feb. 11, 2012) – Hundreds of villagers watched horses fight on Saturday on the southern Filipino city of Kidapawan in North Cotabato province despite a strong protest from animal rights activists in the Philippines.

Horse fighting has been banned in many countries, but it still thrives in the Philippines, Indonesia, China and South Korea.

Organizers of the horse fighting in Kidapawan City insisted that it is part of a long time tradition and culture, especially during important festivals and occasions.

Villagers also bet on their favorite horse, just like cock fighting which is rampant in many provinces and cities in the Philippines.

Animal rights activists have called on lawmakers to pass a law that would totally ban horse fighting in the country. (Geonarri Solmerano)
