DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 21, 2012) – Some 12,000 school chairs, desks and hospital beds have been distributed by the Department of Education to disaster-ravaged provinces of Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley in Mindanao.
They furniture were part of confiscated illegally cut logs that had been used by the Aquino government to make chairs and desks in Mindanao, according to Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte.
He said through a Memorandum of Agreement, the Department of Education and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources agreed to convert the timber into school and hospital fixtures, as well as double-deck beds for soldiers and law enforcers.
Tagum City also received close to P20 million worth illegal timber which would be used to make school desks and chairs. (Mindanao Examiner)
