ZAMBOANGA CITY – Security forces shot and wounded an Abu Sayyaf rebel in a firefight in the restive province of Basilan in the Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines, officials said Wednesday.
Officials said Imran Mijal was brought to hospital after being shot Tuesday in the shoulder in Marang village in Sumisip town.
Mijal is being linked by authorities to the spate of kidnappings and attacks on security forces in the province, just several nautical miles south of Zamboanga City.
Authorities seized from Mijal his M16 automatic rifle and a .45-caliber pistol and munitions.
Security forces tracked down Mijal in his hideout after informants tipped off authorities about his location. He also tried, but failed to escape.
Mijal is said to be under Abu Sayyaf leader Puruji Indama. (Mindanao Examiner)
