Abu Sayyafs release kidnapped Filipino teacher

Chief Editor July 12, 2015

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Abu Sayyaf rebels have freed a male teacher barely two months after they released his sister in the southern Philippines, officials said.

Officials said the 22-year old Russel Bagonoc was freed in Jolo town. No other details were made available by security officials except that he was taken to a military base in Jolo following his freedom.

His sister, Reynadeth Silvano, 31, who is also a teacher, was released unharmed by rebels in May following the payment of ransom.

Officials did not say if ransom was also paid by Bagonoc’s family to the rebels, who originally demanded P10 million from the Department of Education and the victims’ families for their freedom.

Both were kidnapped in Zamboanga Sibugay’s Talusan town on their way to school.

They were the third teacher freed by the Abu Sayyaf since early this year following the release of the 44-year old Allyn Abdurajak, who works for the Sulu School of Fisheries.

Abdurajak was returning home on a motorcycle from the capital town of Jolo when two suspected Abu Sayyaf rebels intercepted her near Indanan town in Sulu. (Mindanao Examiner)
