ZAMBOANGA CITY – Suspected Abu Sayyaf rebels shot dead a member of the Philippine Air Force in an attack in the southern Filipino town of Jolo.
The 27-year old soldier, Andres Nono, was killed just outside a Catholic church on Friday and security officials said the victim was on a vacation in Jolo. He was a member of the 15th Strike Wing based in Sangley Point in Cavite City in Luzon.
Police were investigating the motive of the attack, but many soldiers had been killed by rebels in Jolo in recent months despite a strict security in the town.
There was no immediate statement from the Philippine Air Force about the murder of Nono.
Authorities have tagged the Abu Sayyaf as behind the spate of killings and terrorism in southern Philippines. (Ely Dumaboc)
