DAVAO CITY – Anti-Aquino protesters held a rally Friday in Davao City in southern Philippines and called on the President and his allies in Congress to abolish pork barrel system.
Sheena Duazo, a spokeswoman for the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, who was one of the organizers of the rally, said the Aquino administration should be make accountable for the crimes of corruption that they have evaded.
The rally coincided with the visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines.
“The rotten nature of the Aquino administration has already been exposed to all, yet he desperately clings on to power. The DAP (Disbursement Acceleration Program) had already been proved to be unconstitutional, but other forms of pork barrel, amounting to P37 billion, have already been passed into the 2015 budget. We call on the Pope to hear and echo our call for truth and accountability,” Duazo said.
“By seeing things for himself, he will know that the pork barrel deprives many Filipinos of the life they deserve, while enriching a few politicians who have remained in power through the unscrupulous pork barrel. We call on the Pope to take action on this matter,” she added.
She said they hope that Pope Francis would see the situation of the poor in the country and how corruption in government have become a heavy burden for Filipinos struggling to make their lives better.
“We hope that after the Pope sees the situation in (post-Typhoon) Haiyan (efforts), he will understand that the slow relief and rehabilitation of the survivors are due to the negligence of the government, that the lack of material support are due to public funds being pocketed by politicians through the pork barrel,” Duazo said.
The Pontiff is set to visit Tacloban City and Palo town in central Philippines, two of many areas devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in the past. (Mindanao Examiner)
