CEBU CITY – The Department of Health has urged citizens to clean their surroundings and backyards to prevent the spread of malaria and other diseases carried by mosquitoes.
The DOH said it launched a campaign to educate the public about malaria. It said the last known cases of malaria were recorded in 2011 when 3 people fell ill with the disease in the Santa Catalina in Negros Oriental province.
Although a recent case involved a Filipino worker who arrived home in Negros already infected with malaria that he contracted while in Africa.
The symptoms of malaria include high fever, sweating, headache, vomiting, nausea and chilling and are almost the same as that of dengue fever, but malaria targets the red blood cells. (Hazel Gloria and Pauline dela Cruz)
