DAVAO CITY – Armed men raided the town of Governor Generoso in the southern Philippine province of Davao Oriental late Sunday and attacked a police station, sparking a firefight for several hours, reports said.
It was unclear whether communist rebels or other armed groups were behind the raid. And police and military officials in the province were not immediately available to give a statement.
The province is a known lair of the communist rebel group New People’s Army which is fighting for decades now for the establishment of a Maoist state in the country.
There was no immediate statement from the municipal or provincial government. (Mindanao Examiner)
