ARMM has lowest functional literacy rate in Philippines

Chief Editor November 11, 2015

COTABATO CITY – A recent government survey has showed that the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao has the country’s highest student dropout rate with SOCSARGEN and Davao regions following behind, the Philippines News Agency reported Wednesday.

Citing reports by the Philippine Statistics Authority, ARMM has 14% dropout rate while SOCSARGEN follows with 12.3% and Davao region with 12.2.

ARMM is composed of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao and Lanao provinces, including the cities of Marawi and Lamitan; while SACSARGEN is comprised of the provinces of South Cotabato, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City. And Davao region has the following provinces under it – Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental and Davao City.

The three regions even surpassed the national rate of 10%, according to the 2013 Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey which provides the baseline information on the education and literacy status of Filipinos 10 years and older.

ARMM had the lowest functional literacy rate of 72.1%.

The survey – involving 26,000 households – shows that 26% of those who dropped out left school to look for jobs and 17.7% quit to marry, and 16.5% lost interest in education. (Mindanao Examiner)
