ARMM suspends classes, work in government due to transport strike

Desk Editor October 15, 2017

COTABATO CITY – The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao said it is suspending classes in all levels, as well as work in all government offices on Monday following President Rodrigo Duterte’s order because of a nationwide transport strike by public utility drivers opposing the government’s jeepney modernization program.

Atty. Laissa Alamia, ARMM Executive Secretary, announced the suspension order on Sunday. “In line with Malacañang’s order to suspend work and classes nationwide on Monday, October 16, 2017 due to the planned nationwide transport strike, ARMM is suspending classes as well as work in all government offices on the same day,” she said.

She urged those who will participate in the protest to respect other commuters who are not part of the strike. “We will monitor groups who will participate in the strike tomorrow to assure the safety of the ARMM constituents,” Atty. Alamia said.

Tens of thousands of commuters are expected to be affected by the nationwide strike, but the suspension of work in the private sector is up to the discretion of the employers since it is not covered by the order.

Under the modernization program, public utility vehicles more than 15 years old will be banned from the road and replaced by vehicles with “low-carbon and low-emission technology” that transport groups said would be too expensive. (Bureau of Public Information)
