DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / June 9, 2014) – Government troops clashed with communist rebels in Surigao del Norte province in southern Philippine, officials said Monday.
Officials said the fighting broke out in the village called Cambuayon in Bacuag town on June 8 and lasted more than 20 minutes.
There were no reports of casualties on both sides, but Capt. Alberto Caber, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, said soldiers had recovered weapons and explosives left behind by the New People’s Army.
Caber said among the weapons recovered by troops were four AK-47 assault rifles, 15 magazines, two hand grenades, a rifle grenade, a radio transceiver, six bandoleers and six backpacks.
“The residents provided the information to the 30th Infantry Battalion on the harassment and extortion activities made by the CPP-NPA in the area,” he said.
Caber said the military have recovered 45 AK-47 rifles from the rebel group – which is fighting for a separate state – in separate clashes in eastern Mindanao since last year. (Mindanao Examiner)
