Army sergeant kills self in Zamboanga
ZAMBOANGA CITY – An army soldier was found dead in his bunker in the southern Philippine city of Zamboanga in what police said is a case of suicide.
Police said the body of the 44-year old Staff Sergeant Edgardo Baguingan was recovered in his post late Thursday. His had gunshot wounds in the head when police recovered his corpse in the village of Sangali.
The soldier, a member of the 24th Infantry Battalion, was a native of Ballasteros town in Cagayan province and it was unclear what drove him to commit suicide, although police said it recovered three bullet shells of M16 automatic rifle and two empty bottles of brandy and two cell phones, including Baguingan’s issued rifle and several magazines.
It was unknown whether the soldier was alone in the bunker or if any of his companion witnessed the suicide or had tried to stop him from killing himself.
“Victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the head that caused his untimely death. SOCO team processed the crime scene and recovered one unit M16-R4A3 rifle issued firearm of the victim, loaded with 1 magazine with 13 ammos and attached another 1 magazine loaded with 30 ammos,” a police report said.
SOCO refers to Scenes of Crime Officer of the local police force.
The soldier’s superiors or his unit did not issue any statement about the tragedy. (Mindanao Examiner)
