COTABATO CITY – A government soldier was wounded in an attack by unidentified group of gunmen in the restive Maguindanao province in southern Philippines, officials said on Sunday.
Officials said the soldier was rushed to a military hospital and later transferred to a private hospital. The troops from the 1st Mechanized Battalion and 63rd Division Reconnaissance Company were on a mission when gunmen ambushed them in the village of Katibpuan in Talayan town.
The attack sparked a firefight which the military claimed also killed or wounded a still undetermined number of ambushers.
A follow-up military operation yielded a rifle and a magazine with four bullets. The military did not say if the attack was carried out by rebels or civilians sympathetic to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters or other jihadist groups in the province.
The rebels have been fighting for Muslim independence in the southern Philippines. (Mindanao Examiner)
