DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / July 4, 2014) – Residents of the fire-stricken Isla Verde in the southern Philippine city of Davao have started rebuilding their houses – helping each other in the traditional Bayanihan way – in an effort to put back the once healthy community there.
Isla Verde, particularly Barangay 23-C, was hit by a huge fire on the night of April 4 this year after a lighted candle was left unattended in the house of Tisay Mohammad. The fire also spread to Barangay 21-C and 22-C and lasted over 5 hours.
More than 1,000 families were affected by the conflagration and some 15 million in damages were reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. (Mindanao Examiner)
