
BASILAN PROVINCE (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 27, 2013) – Three people were killed and another was wounded in an ambush in the restive province of Basilan in the Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao, police said Tuesday.
Police said among the dead were two teachers – Rodolfo Saavedra and his wife Gloria – and the wounded has been identified by authorities as Ellen Cubico.
The three were travelling on a motorcycle in the village of Maloong Canal in Lamitan City when an unidentified gunman attacked them.
The assailant took the victims’ motorcycle and escaped towards Isabela City. Police said it is investigating the attack and who was behind it.
The killings of the teachers drew widespread condemnation in Basilan province. Gun attacks are common occurrence in Basilan where most of the murders are perpetrated by suspected hired killers. (With a report from Richard Falcatan)
