LOCAL CONTRACTORS donated 115 bicycles in three secondary schools in Leyte to help students from far-flung areas improve their school attendance.
Leyte (1st District) Board Member Gina Merilo said the Philippine Contractors Association (PCA) -Leyte Chapter donated more than 100 bicycles on Wednesday to three public schools in Leyte province.
These schools are Sta. Fe National High School (80 bicycles), Kiling National High School (20 bicycles), and Tanauan National High School (15 bicycles). Some of these bikes were provided by foreign friends of PCA members.
“These bicycles are of great help to students especially those who live far from school and will have to walk or commute every day,” Merilo said.
As a counterpart, Merilo distributed a sack of rice for every parent of the students during the turnover.
The responsibility of identifying student-beneficiaries is being passed on to school officials. Priority recipients are poor students whose houses are kilometers away from the campus.
Merilo said the contractor’s group planned to distribute more bicycles in selected schools in the towns of Carigara, Dulag, and Julita.
“The PCA, aside from using their own funds, also seeks help from friends who are willing to help in funding the projects of the organization like the distribution of bicycles to public schools,” Merilo said. (By Roel Amazona)
