ZAMBOANGA CITY – An unidentified man lobbed a grenade at a construction site in Basilan province in the restive Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines, police and military reported on Wednesday.
It said the blast occurred in Tipo-Tipo town, a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf rebels blamed by authorities for the spate of terrorism and kidnappings in Basilan, just several nautical miles south of Zamboanga City.
No one was reported killed or injured in the attack and no individual claimed responsibility for the explosion.
Government workers were finishing a farm-to-market road project in the town. Such attacks are not uncommon in Basilan where Abu Sayyaf had targeted construction firms in the past. (Mindanao Examiner – Ely Dumaboc)
