ZAMBOANGA CITY – Local police were investigating a blast at dawn Thursday outside the house of a Sulu town mayor, although no one was hurt in the explosion, officials said.
Mayor Asri Taib (PDP-Laban) and his father, Amilhamja, the former mayor, were in the house in Canelar Moret when the blast occurred, according to Council member Josephine Pareja, head of the peace and order committee.

“We still don’t know what happened and investigation is still going on,” she said. “Both the mayor and his father are in the house at the time of the explosion. No one was hurt.”
Soldiers and policemen were sent to the area as post-blast investigators gathered debris from the blast to help them piece together evidence and determine the type of explosive went off in the area.
It was unclear whether the blast targeted Taib or any of his family members, but the wall of the gated house is just about 6 feet. The blast, officials said, was several meters away from the gate.

Taib did not give any public statement, but prior to the blast, a man posted a warning on the mayor’s Facebook page and accused him of corruption. The man’s account, which has only 74 friends or followers, could be a fake account.
Army Colonel Antonio John Divinagracia, commander of the Joint Task Force Zamboanga, said it appears there was no intent to kill any members of the Taib family, otherwise the explosive could have been thrown inside the compound. “This is an isolated case and not terrorism,” he said.
