Chief Editor April 3, 2015

ZAMBOANGA CITY – At least 5 people were confirmed dead after a motorized capsized off the southern Filipino province of Sulu, authorities said Friday.

It said more than a dozen passengers were injured and had been rushed to hospital in Jolo town after being rescued by passing boats on the night of April 2 mishap. The overloaded boat was sailing to Tapul Island from Jolo town when huge waves battered the vessel until it overturned.

It was unknown why the Coast Guard failed to inspect the boat which was illegally operating, but the police began an investigation into the accident. The vessel was reportedly carrying some 50 people.

Sulu Gov. Totoh Tan has dispatched a team to the hospital in Jolo to check on the survivors and provided them clothing, among others, as initial intervention.

The boat was also loaded with construction materials when it capsized. (Mindanao Examiner)
