TOP YACHT company Europa Yachts encourages Filipinos—yachting enthusiasts or otherwise—to pool their support behind the Subic Sailing Club and other Philippine representatives, which are set to sail for global yachting competitions in 2019. This is in the wake of a strong performance by Philippine participants at the 12th China Cup International Regatta (CCIR), which was held last year from November 8 to 12, 2018, in Daya Bay, Shenzhen, China.
“The recently concluded China Cup International Regatta was the perfect showcase of Filipino talent, passion and ingenuity in the sport of sailing,” said Richard Sarinas, Europa Yachts’ Director of Marketing. “We’re proud of the Subic Sailing Club yachtsmen coming home from Shenzhen, knowing that they brought their best to the competition. This year, 2019, they are poised to perform even better on the global stage.”
The China Cup International Regatta is one of the most anticipated events in competitive sailing. It registers more than 1,600 pro and amateur sailors from 30 countries around the world, and China’s waters form the racetrack for nearly 200 sailboats. The regatta is recognized by World Sailing, the sport’s international governing body, and from it has received the distinguishing title of “Asian Regatta of the Year” five times.
The Subic Sailing Club entered this prestigious competition under the banner of Europa Yachts. Their team in the Beneteau 40.7 One Design competitive division was captained by Jun Avecilla, skippered by Jun Villanueva, and completed by crew members Marcus Avecilla, Zedrik Avecilla, Vladimir Pullarca, Fredrick Helgesen, Jose Sehwani, Mike Sapit, Reimond Silvestre and Silas Reyes.
Europa Yachts acknowledges the various milestones cleared by Philippine sailors in this event. Fellow Philippine reps from the Standard Insurance Centennial Sailing Team, led by Ernesto Echauz, clinched victory in the IRC A Division. The Philippine Sailing Association-Standard Insurance Team, on the other hand, secured a first place finish in the ASAF Keel Boat category. And in the China Cup 2018’s Sailing Spirit Grand Ceremony at the Dapeng Fortress in Shenzhen, the Subic Sailing Club was awarded “Outstanding International Contribution of the Year” by the China Cup Organizing Committee for helping nurture interest in the sport of sailing in this part of Asia.
Sportsmanship and camaraderie among sailors, however, were not the only highlights of this year’s China Cup International Regatta. After all, the CCIR’s China Sailing Awards ceremony was also an opportunity for yachting enthusiasts to explore the crème de la crème of the sailing industry’s offerings for the year. On the occasion of the ceremony, for example, French luxury yacht maker Beneteau bagged two top awards: “Performance Keelboat of the Year” for its foiled monohull keelboat Figaro Beneteau 3 and “Cruiser of the Year” for its stepped hull cruiser Oceanis 51.1. Beneteau boats are among the many outstanding vessels being offered through Europa Yachts.
“Beneteau has been the China Cup Regatta’s long-term partner over the event’s 12-year lifespan,” Sarinas observed. “We’ll continue to watch these titans of the sailing industry in events like this and convey all the exciting news to Filipino yachtsmen,” he added.
