CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Police have launched an operation to track down 3 motorcycle gunmen who killed a radio broadcaster in a broad daylight attack in Ozamiz City in southern Philippines, reports said Friday.
It said the gunmen shot Cosme Maestrado on Thursday outside a shopping center in downtown area. Maestrado was talking to somebody when one of the gunmen approached him and without warning fired several times at the victim.
The gunmen escaped after the attack, leaving behind the bloodied broadcaster.
The motive of the killing is still unknown, but the attack came barely a week after an unidentified gunman also murdered 65-year old Gregorio Ybañes, president of the Davao del Norte Press and Radio Club, in Tagum City also in southern Philippines.
Ybañes was shot outside his house and his murder remains unsolved.
On Friday, gunmen also strafed a roadside restaurant of television news commentator Anthony Teberna along Visayas Avenue in Quezon City. No one was reported injured or killed in the attack which occurred before dawn.
Various media organizations have condemned both killings. The Human Rights Watch said the Aquino administration’s record in ensuring accountability for the killers of journalists has been dismal. (Mindanao Examiner)
