SULU – Some 270 pregnant women and their husbands attended the “Buntis Congress” in the town of Maimbung in the southern Philippine province of Sulu where organizers discussed safe motherhood and responsible parenthood, officials said Saturday.
The congress was a partnership between the municipal government of Maimbung and the town’s rural health unit. Maimbung Mayor Shihla Hayudini, a strong advocate of women’s rights, pushed for the holding of the “Buntis Congress” in an effort to educate – especially first time – pregnant women and their spouses on various issues relating to responsible parenthood, among others.

Dr. Winafe Bravo and Benjo Sulay, of the rural health unit, conducted the congress, which was also by Dr. Fahra Omar, of the Integrated Provincial Health Office, who lectured on responsible parenthood.
The president of the Sulu Provincial Women’s Council, Nurunisah Tan, also spoke on topics pertaining to the laws protecting women and children from violence. While Adil Alfad discussed women’s rights in Islam. (Zamboanga Post)
