ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 8, 2011) – More than 20 people were injured after a wayward passenger bus rammed a tree on Thursday and narrowly missing a 20-meter plunge in a ravine in the southern Filipino province of Zamboanga Sibugay.

Rescuers said they pulled out 22 passengers from the bus that came all the way from Bacolod City in the central Philippine province of Negros Occidental.

“The driver said he lost control of the wheel and hit the tree. They were lucky because that tree saved their lives. There is a ravine on the other side, probably 20 meters down,” said Ricardo Manlungit, who was among those who helped rescue the passengers.

The bus, owned by Ceres Transit, was on its way to Zamboanga City when the accident occurred at around 2 a.m. not far away from where a tree was uprooted by heavy rains and strong winds. (Mindanao Examiner)
