Canadian Screen Awards 2016: Schitt’s Creek, Orphan Black and Room win big – CBC News

Editor March 14, 2016

Schitt’s Creek, Orphan Black and Room were the big winners at Sunday night’s Canadian Screen Awards — or  should we say “The Candy’s”?

Host Norm Macdonald introduced the idea of renaming the awards in honour of late Canadian comedian John Candy at the beginning of the show, and both presenters and recipients happily embraced the idea.

Nine-year-old Jacob Tremblay, who later won Best Actor in a Leading Role for the movieRoom, was the first to adopt Macdonald’s proposal as he presented the “Candy” for Best Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role to Ari Millen of the television series Orphan Black.

Room won nine awards in total Sunday night, including best actress for Brie Larson, who also won the Oscar in the same category last month. Emma Donoghue took home the Canadian Screen Award for best adapted screenplay and Joan Allen won for best supporting actress. The film also won best motion picture and achievement in directing, editing and makeup.

CBC’s Schitt’s Creek dominated the television comedy category, winning best comedy series, best actor in a continuing leading comedic role (Eugene Levy), best actress in a continuing leading comedic role (Catherine O’Hara). The series won six more Canadian Screen Awardsearlier in the week, including best writing, best supporting actor and best supporting actress.

Bell Media’s Orphan Black won seven awards in the drama category throughout the week, including Tatiana Maslany’s best actress trophy on Sunday.

Sunday’s star-studded gala finished off a week of celebrating the past year’s achievements in Canadian film, television and digital media. It was broadcast from the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.(CBC News)
