CEBU – The Cebu Capitol Public Employment Service Office or PESO will vie for the National PESO Award when it competes with other PESO regional awardees on October 2014 in General Santos City in Mindanao.
The Cebu Capitol PESO was given a slot to participate in the national selection after it has been awarded as the 2013 Regional Best PESO in Region 7 on June 19 in San Juan town in Siquijor province. The honor automatically qualifies the PESO to have a chance to bag the National PESO Award three months from now.
PESO head Dr. Mathea Baguia, who received the plaque in behalf of the Cebu Provincial Government for the 1st Class Provincial category, said that the regional winner was chosen based on criteria, which her office had complied with satisfactorily as compared to other PESO in the region.
This includes services and programs implemented, core services delivered like referral and placement, labor market information, career guidance, and employment coaching, among others. These initiatives led to referrals and job placements of applicants in local and overseas opportunities.
Also in terms of labor market information, Capitol’s PESO has provided thousands of job openings as well as career guidance and employment coaching in 2013 compared to the PESO in other provinces in Central Visayas.
PESO-Capitol has other programs that are unique to Cebu only, such as the valedictorian and salutatorian scholarship program, among many others.
The special job fair for Persons with Disabilities, a joint of PESO-Capitol and Provincial Social Welfare, also offered this sector the opportunity for employment.
Under its Special Program for the Employment of Students, Capitol’s PESO has almost 1,000 beneficiaries. There is also the community-based training program on soap and candle making, meat processing and cosmetology for the towns and cities. A PESO Capitol staff employee, trained by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, facilitates these trainings.
PESO-Capitol conducted six job fairs in 2013—three for local hiring and another three for overseas work. Every month, 10 special recruitment activities for overseas firms are held.
Recruitment agencies based in Manila and other places come to Cebu for direct recruitment and on the spot hiring. This would help the applicants save on travel expenses to Manila to inquire on the result of the interview.
As stated on the plaque which Dr. Baguia received in behalf of PESO-Capitol, it was given in recognition of the quality and magnitude of employment service rendered and other DOLE programs implemented for gainful employment, creativity and leadership that serves as inspiration to PESO managers in Region 7.
The awarding of the regional winner coincided with the 7th Regional PESO Managers Congress. (Ramon Gallardo)
