ILIGAN CITY – Police arrested woman who was transporting automatic weapons to Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur province in southern Philippines, officials said Tuesday.
Senior Superintendent Orlando Beñas, the local police chief, said the woman, Tomasa Caberte, was arrested at a bus terminal after her backpack yielded a KG-9 machine pistol with silencer and two magazines; and eight .45-caliber pistols with magazines.
The 45-year old Caberte, who travelled by bus from Danao City in Cebu province in central Philippines, told police that she was to bring the weapons to Pagadian City.
Caberte, a native of Guinsay village in Danao City, was immediately detained.
Beñas said the bus conductor alerted police after he noticed the suspicious backpack on the seat occupied by Caberte.
The weapons were believed made by gunsmiths in Danao City, but police did not say who the consignee of the pistols in Pagadian City was.
It was also unclear how Caberte managed to transport the weapons without being detected by authorities in Cebu. (Mindanao Examiner)
