DAVAO CITY – The Philippine Army said an eleven-year old boy, who claimed to be a member of the communist rebel group New People’s Army, has surrendered in Davao del Norte’s Asuncion town in Mindanao.
Capt. Alberto Caber, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, said the boy’ surrender to the 60th Infantry Battalion in Camansa village was made possible by the village chieftain Elizabeth Abad.
He said the boy – a native of Mati City in Davao Oriental province – told soldiers that he laid mines for the NPA during his six years stay with the rebel group and that he had been in six armed clashes with security forces in the provinces of Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur.
His fantastic tale could not be independently confirmed, but Caber said they were coordinating with social workers in an effort to trace the family of the boy.
The NPA has been fighting for a separate state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
