PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Apr. 20, 2012) – A Chinese mining executive has been reported missing in the restive southern Philippine region of Mindanao where security forces are battling terrorism and kidnappings for ransom, authorities said on Friday.

It said the 40-year old Rui Lei was missing for over a week now and efforts to contact him proved futile.

Lei is working for China’s Chenzhou Mining Group Corporation in the town of Claver in Surigao del Sur province, where communist rebels are actively operating.

Police said the Chinese firm has reported the matter and that authorities were searching for the missing executive, who is a native of Jiangxi province in southern China.

Lei was supposed to visit his Filipino friends in Surigao City when he disappeared.

In October last year, three South Korean nationals – Woo Shu Bong, Kim Nam Dou and Choi – who had been reported missing in the southern Philippines were actually kidnapped in Lanao province.

The foreigners were released later in November, but one of them died in the hospital due to a ruptured appendix. (Mindanao Examiner)
