DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 28, 2012) – The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers – Davao City Chapter has donated a rainwater tank and 10 garbage bins to a government school in a landslide-hit village here.
Dubbed as “Greening Existing School Project,” Engineer Erdsan Rene Suero, the PICE local chapter president, said the activity in the village of Ladian in Marilog district, was the 5th under the Project Green Engineering Philippines.
It was conducted under the leadership of Department of Public Works and Highways Undersecretary Romeo Momo, the national president; and Engineer David Sanchez, 1st vice president and over-all chairman of the project.
The village was hit by a landslide in June 11 following days of heavy rains. An 11-year old girl was killed and another missing in the landslide that also buried at least 9 houses.
“The project aims to implement and raise the level of awareness of the community and the school on proper waste disposal and waste management by providing adequate garbage bins on each recipient school and provide rainwater collector tank for water supply conservation,” said PICE in a statement sent to the Mindanao Examiner.
It said four other schools were recipient of the same greening facilities – the Diego Silang Elementary School of Matina Aplaya; New Carmen Elementary School of Tugbok District; Gatungan Elementary School of Bunawan district, all in Davao City; and Nawan Primary School of Malita North district, Davao del Sur province.
