DAVAO CITY – The Philippine military have alerted troops in the southern province of Agusan del Sur following the discovery of a powerful roadside bomb planted by communist rebels.
It said civilians discovered the bomb in the village of Los Arcos in Sibagat town and reported it to local pro-government militias who disarmed the explosive before it could explode.
Capt. Alberto Caber, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, said the bomb weighed more than 11 pounds and connected to a blasting cap with a two-meter wire.
He said the military has so far recovered at least 20 improvised explosives planted by New People’s Army rebels in the region since early this year, but Caber also disclosed that 9 civilians had been injured in rebel bombings in Surigao del Sur and North Cotabato provinces in April alone.
“The continued manufacture and use of these IEDs are gross violations of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law,” Caber said, but the NPA claimed the attacks only targeted police and military forces and not civilians and that all explosives are command-detonated.
The NPA has been fighting for many decades now for the establishment of a separate state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
