ZAMBOANGA CITY – At least 4 people were reported killed and three others injured in a clash between two warring families on a remote island-town in the southern Philippines.
The fighting erupted on the island of Siasi on Saturday after the two groups – both armed with guns – crossed path and shot it out killing the victims.
The latest clash stemmed from a long time family feud and aggravated by land conflict and political rivalry on the island.
Police and military authorities have not issued any statement on the fighting and it was unknown if there were civilians injured or killed in the clash.
Clan war or “rido” as it is locally known, is not uncommon in the Muslim region, and had already killed and wounded hundreds over the past decades.
The fighting is often deadly and could go on for years and even decades if not settled by the protagonists themselves – usually through payment of blood money and swearing to the holy Koran – with the help of political and religious leaders. (Mindanao Examiner)
