ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Coast Guard rescued 22 picnickers from an island off Zamboanga City in southern Philippines after their boat failed to return to ferry them out.

The picnickers, all employees of Park 88 Restaurant, went to Santa Cruz Island for a party on December 31, but bad weather and rough seas prevented their boatman from sailing.

The employees, using their cell phones, their families to say they were stranded on the island which is midway between Zamboanga City and Basilan province.

The emergency call reached the Coast Guard which dispatched a patrol boat and rescued all employees before New Year’s Eve celebration. (Mindanao Examiner)
