The competitive rate of recruitment examination for teachers for public primary schools remains low across the nation, according to a survey by The Yomiuri Shimbun.
The competitive rate of the examination for teachers to be recruited in April next year was 3.4 times on average among 68 boards of education and other entity of Tokyo, other prefectures and ordinance-designated cities, according to the survey.
Of them, the figure for 17 boards was lower than 3 times.
Due to an increasing number of teachers who are expected to reach the mandatory retirement age, the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry estimates the number of teachers to be recruited will reach the highest in the 2017 academic year.
A ministry official said, “We hope efforts are made to improve screening methods so as to find new teachers from wide age brackets and with abundant knowledge and various backgrounds.”
The competitive rate for the recruitment of teachers for public primary schools stood the highest of 12.5 times in the 2000 academic year and has been declining since then.(The Japan News)
