COTABATO CITY – Motorcycle gunmen killed a police officer who was leading an anti-drug unit in a daring attack in Tacurong City in the southern Philippine province of Sultan Kudarat, police said Sunday.
Police said the 46-year old Senior Inspector Orlando Guira was killed in the ambush on Saturday evening. Guira, who headed a special anti-drug task force in Cotabato City, was on a motorcycle heading home when attacked by the gunmen, believed to be hired killers.
It said Guira was supposed to pick up his wife, but the woman took a tricycle instead, sparing her from death. Guira was shot several times with .45-caliber pistol.
It was not immediately known whether the killing was in retaliation for Guira’s anti-drug campaign or not, but police said it is investigating the murder. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the killing.
President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the police and military and other law enforcement agencies to intensify the war on drugs. Hundreds of mostly small time drug pushers had been killed since Duterte assumed the presidency two months ago. (With a report from Rose Muneza)
