ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Apr. 15, 2012) – An unidentified gunman shot dead a policemen and wounded two security guards in a daring attack in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines.
The policeman was shot near a restaurant along Camins Road where the two security guards were working. The motive of the attack is still unknown, but state media identified the slain policeman as Florante Tuazon and the wounded security guards as Rafael Rosales and Deinrib Piyapimuk.
The attack occurred just as the police was tightening security in Zamboanga following the killing this month of Dr. Arturo Eustaquio, president of the Universidad de Zamboanga.
Eustaquio was on a motorcycle when was shot several times by gunmen who were also riding a motorcycle in the village of Santa Maria.
The killings in Zamboanga are not uncommon with more than five dozen people murdered since early this year and there is no sign that the spate of killings, largely blamed to guns-for-hire, will stop unless authorities mounted an aggressive operation against the killers. (Mindanao Examiner)
