The police have no plans to bring back the eight Malaysian children reportedly recruited and trained to become Islamic State for Iraq and Syria (Isis) militants, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today, citing jurisdictional and ideological setbacks. The inspector-general of police said that the matter was outside of their power and that the force could not do much if the children insisted on holding on to their belief. “We will always try our best to assist, especially those who have reached Iraq or Syria. We will try to influence them to renounce their mission and come back. But some things are out of bounds for us such as going there and bringing them back.
“This is an ideological problem, a problem related to their beliefs. How are we to bring them back if they still hold on to it?” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today. Khalid was responding to a report quoting Bukit Aman Special Branch director Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Mohd Harun that at least eight Malaysian children were recruited and trained as Isis fighters in the two countries. Fuzi said although the police did not have the complete information, investigations found the children were being trained at the camps. Khalid said police would carry out early prevention measures by monitoring and stopping any attempts for children to be taken to the conflict areas. (DIYANA IBRAHIM)
